About Laurens South Carolina

Laurens county sits in the lower piedmont region of South Carolina and
is bordered on the northwest by Greenville SC and The Enoree River on the
southeast by
Newberry SC. The Saluda River and Lake Greenwood
separate the County from
Abbeville and Greenwood on the southwest.

Until World War II the economy was dominated by the textile industry,
afterwards economic diversification and the consolidation of the smaller rural
schools resulted in less dependence on the textile economy.

Laurens rich in history The original inhabitants of Laurens County were
the Cherokee Indians.The first white settler was John Duncan and he settled in
Laurens mostly because of the abundant wildlife and lush vegetation. The
town of Laurens The town of Laurens was known as Laurensville until the
nineteenth century and then the name changed to the present day name
Laurens and is the county seat. The first courthouse was built in 1840 and
was enlarged in 1857.

Laurens became known for it's tailor made clothes. Andrew Johnson, and his
brother came to Laurens and opened a tailor shop. By 1840, the area was
booming with medical practitioners, a confectionery and fruit store, carriage,
buggy and wagon shops, tailoring establishments, building contractors, flour
and corn mills, and an abundance of  whiskey distilleries.

Laurens by the end of the Twentieth Century was a textile town & had several
cotton mills who employed many of the residents. In the past decade the mills
have closed and other industries have taken their place. Michelin, Milliken and
Wal-Mart established large warehouse distribution center, Manufacturers to
include CeramTec, Torrington, Avery Dennison and Norbord built plants.
Several automobile parts suppliers established facilities in northern Laurens
county at Fountain Inn to supply BMW's large upstate automobile plant.
Retirement Centers have been built by three church denominations. Because of
its upstate location adjacent to the rapidly growing Greenville / Spartanburg
area, Laurens County is
continuing  to experience economic and population growth.
